Pengertian Simple Present Tense

Ada 16 tenses yang harus dikuasai agar lancar berbahasa Inggris dengan mantap, tetapi yang paling utama dan biasa digunakan salah satunya adalah simple present.

Simple present tense adalah tenses yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan kejadian atau aktivitas yang menjadi kebiasaan atau berlangsung berulang kali. Disamping itu, simple present tense ini juga menjadi tenses yang sering digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris.

Untuk menulis kalimat dengan simple present tense, kata kerja yang digunakan adalah bentuk dasar atau Verb 1. Saat temen-temen menuliskan kata ganti orang ketiga (He, She, dan It), jangan lupa untuk menambahkan huruf s/es sesudah Verb 1 (Verb 1 + s/es).

e.q. He works at the Microsoft corporation now.

Dari kalimat "He works at the Microsoft corporation now." kita dapat mendapatkan kesimpulan:

He: kata gati orang ketiga.                works: Verb 1.

Oleh karena itulah ditambahkan huruf s/es setelah verb 1.

Formula Simple Present Tense

I / You / They / We + Verb 1

Example: “I go to the movie theater with my friend”

I + go (verb 1) + the rest of the sentence.

She / He / It + Verb 1 + s/es

Example: “She goes to the school by bicycle”

She + goes (verb 1 + es) + the rest of the sentence.

Untuk menentukan penggunaan huruf s/es untuk kata kerja orang ketiga, temen-temen harus melihat akhiran dari kata kerja (verb) tersebut, perhatikan contoh dibawah ini:

Menambahkan “s” pada kata kerja yang berakhiran vokal + Y; dan berakhiran E

• Buy – buys
• Say – says
• Make – makes
• Create – creates

Menambahkan “es” pada kata kerja yang berakhiran O, CH, SH, S, dan X

• Do – does
• Approach – approaches
• Blush – blushes
• Process – processes
• Tax – taxes

Menambahkan “ies” pada kata kerja yang berakhiran konsonan + Y

• Modify – modifies
• Cry – cries
• Magnify – magnifies
• Carry – carries

Untuk memperjelas, kita masukkan contoh di atas kedalam sebuah kalimat.

1. He makes me chocolate for Valentine!
2. She says she will come for sleep-over tonight.
3. My mother is the one who pays the taxes.
4. She blushes when he says she’s beautiful.
5. The baby cries all night. I can’t barely sleep.

Simple present tense memiliki tiga jenis kalimat yang terbagi menjadi affirmative, negative, dan interrogative. Misalnya untuk menulis kalimat yang berasal dari kata “To think”.

I think	Do I think?	I do not think.
You think	Do you think?	You do not think.
He thinks	Does he think?	He does not think.
She thinks	Does she think?	She does not think.
It thinks	Does it think?	It does not think.
We think	Do we think?	We do not think.
They think	Do they think?	They do not think.

Formula Affirmative, Negative, dan Interrogative

Simple present affirmative

Subject + Verb 1 / Verb dasar / to be (is, am , are) + Object

Example:

“I read this novel every day.”

“He cries every night since his dog died.”

Simple present interrogative

Do / Does + Subject + Verb 1 + Object

Example:

“Do you think he’s mad at me?”

“Does he read the instructions?”

Simple present negative

Subject + Don’t / Doesn’t + Verb 1 + Object atau

Subject + to be (is, am, are) + not + Object

Example:

“I don’t think she gets the letter.”

“He doesn’t come last night.”
